Joe began painting on the streets of Santa Monica in 1988. A loose affiliate with tagging and simple style lettering, he later converged upon the graffiti scene in San Francisco with a fresh eye and renewed passion. More street activity began, and his influence of the street and urban experience manifested itself into large scale works on board. The work is a culmination of his interest for layering, graffiti, degradation, lettering, mechanical drawing and natural elements. Simultaneously, he began blowing glass at San Francisco State University in 1992. The current glasswork is an investigation into pure forms derived from the cylinder, sphere and cone. These simple "volumes" are influenced by Cubist paintings. The energy and motion of the painting related fully to the same type of energy found in the glassblowing process. Action and reaction influences both the craft of glassblowing and the spontaneity of his painting and drawing.
